Italy: 4th International Rome Film Festival gets underway

Rome, 15 October (AKI) - The fourth International Rome Film Festival opened on Thursday with a screening of the movie ‘Triage’, written and directed by Academy-award winner director Danis Tanovic. The film - starring Colin Farrell, Paz Vega and Christopher Lee - is based on the novel Triage by former foreign correspondent Scott Anderson.

The movie follows the story of Mark (Farrell), a war photographer who returns bloody and bruised from an expedition in Kurdistan, in the 1980s, during Saddam Hussein's repression of the Kurds.

Back in Dublin with his wife Eva (Vega), Mark is shocked to hear that his friend and colleague David hasn’t made it home. With the help of Eva’s grandfather, Joaquin (Christopher Lee), who was responsible for the ‘purification’ of war criminals after the Spanish Civil War, Mark goes to the root of his problems and reveals the shocking truth.

‘Triage’ is one of the fourteen films in competition in the Official Selection section which will be judged by an international jury composed of seven artists. The president is Milos Forman - the multi-awarding winning Czech director of masterpieces such as 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest', 'Hair', 'Ragtime', 'Amadeus' and 'The People Vs. Larry Flint'.

But all festivalgoers can participate in the selection of The Golden Marc’Aurelio Audience Award for Best Film - BNL, since every ticket holder, upon entering the theatre, will receive a “scratch and vote” card.

Among the fourteen films in the competition, three are Italian: 'Alza la Testa' by Alessandro Angelini, 'L’Uomo che Verrą' by Giorgio Diritti and 'Viola di Mare' with Valeria Solarino and Isabella Ragonese. But there will also be space for Jason Reitman.

He returns to Rome after the success of 'Juno' with a new film 'Up In The Air', starring George Clooney and Vera Farmiga. Helen Mirren stars in the film 'The Last Station' by Michael Hoffman.

Out of Competition/Anteprima films include 'Julie & Julia' by Nora Ephron with Meryl Streep, Amy Adams and Stanley Tucci, and the latest film from the Coen brothers, 'A Serious Man', while James Ivory will bring to Rome T'he City Of Your Final Destination' with Anthony Hopkins, Laura Linney, Charlotte Ginsburg and Alexandra Maria Lara.

Among the festival's special events is a homage to Heath Ledger with a screening of his last film directed by Terry Gilliam, 'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus', and 'Homage to Rome' by Franco Zeffirelli with Monica Bellucci and Andrea Bocelli.

Beside the Official Competition there are other sections, like Extra, which will offer twelve documentaries in competition for the Silver Marc’Aurelio prize and Alice nella Cittą, the children’s section of the Festival, that features twelve films in competition.

Alice’s jury is composed of 65 children between the ages of 8 and 17, selected from schools across the country: they will award two prizes, “Marc’Aurelio, Alice nella cittą”.

Again this year, Via Veneto will be the seat of The Business Street, a film fair for buyers and sellers. From October 15th to October 19th there will be screenings, meetings between producers, buyers, and sellers, conferences and workshops on important economic issues and other issues of the national and international film industry.

The festival closes on 23 October.
