Thailand: Coup leader a multimillionaire, media reports




Bangkok, 27 Nov. (AKI) - Thailand’s former chief of the army and coup leader has disclosed his family's wealth totals 94 million baht, or 2.8 million dollars.

According to local media, General Sonthi Boonyaratkalin (photo) declared the assets to the National Counter Corruption Commission when he took the position of deputy prime minister in October, although the information has just been revealed now.

Sonthi declared assets of 38.79 million baht (1.2 million dollars) while his first wife Sukalaya has assets of 14.04 million baht (450,000 dollars) and his second wife, Piyada, has assets of 42.07 million baht (1.4 million dollars).

The declaration does not specify how the assets were accumulated.

Sonthi, the former commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Army heads the military junta that rules the kingdom.

A Muslim, he became the de facto head of government of Thailand after overthrowing the elected government in a coup d'ťtat in September 2006.

Sonthi has two wives, Sukanya and Piyada, despite legal prohibitions against bigamy.
