Indonesia: Former MP gets three years for receiving bribe
Jakarta, 30 October (AKI/Jakarta Post) - Former member of the Indonesian parliament Abdul Hadi Djamal was on Friday sentenced to three years in jail for receiving bribes related to several transportation ministry's infrastructure projects in Eastern Indonesia.
"The defendant is legally and convincingly guilty of corruption and should serve three years jail term and pay 150 million Indonesian rupiahs (15,000 dollars) in fines," presiding judge Sutiyono said, reading from the verdict at Indonesia's Corruption Court.
The verdict was lower than the five year prison term demanded by prosecutors.
The panel of judges, according to Sutiyono, considered the defendant had cooperated during the trial and he also admitted wrongdoing.
Abdul, was arrested while accepting 54 million rupiahs and 90,000 dollars from transportation ministry official Darmawati Dareho on 2 March.
The money was provided by PT Kurnia Jaya Wira Bhakti, to ensure the company's bid for infrastructure development projects was successful.
Abdul allegedly took the bribe while serving as a member of the parliament's budgetary committee which monitored the 100 billion rupiah development projects.
