Indonesia: Tapes 'framing' corruption officials given to police
Indonesia, 19 Nov. (AKI/Jakarta Post) - Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said it has handed to police controversial wiretapped phone conversation recordings in which businessmen and high ranking law enforcement officials allegedly plotted to frame two KPK members.
KPK interim chairman Tumpak Hatorangan Panggabean made the announcement on Thursday.
The recordings, played publicly at Indonesia's Constitutional Court earlier this month, contain conversations between businessman Anggodo Widjojo – brother of graft suspect Anggoro Widjojo, and a 'middleman' named as Ary Muladi.
Several high-ranking officials from the Attorney General’s Office and the police are also heard also apparently discussing the framing of two KPK deputy chairmen.
Police have named KPK deputies Chandra M. Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto in bribery and power abuse cases.
Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered the suspension of several public officials over the case.
Among those named were National Police chief detective Susno Duadji, deputy attorney general Abdul Hakim Ritonga, deputy head of the Witness and Victim Protection Institution I Ketut Swarna and several policemen.
Earlier this week, a presidential fact-finding team on the KPK scandal recommended the government drop the cases due to insufficient evidence.
Yudhoyono himself is also mentioned in the wiretapped conversation, but has denied any connection with the case.
