Iran: Police arrest students during street clashes in Tehran
Tehran, 7 Dec. (AKI) - At least two people were reportedly arrested in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Monday as Iranian police clashed with student protesters and opposition supporters who chanted anti-government slogans. The clashes occurred as people gathered for an annual rally marking the killing of students in 1953.
Basiji militias aligned with the government were reportedly using batons against the protesters while police fired tear gas into the crowds.
However, due to a foreign media ban, reports could not be verified.
Iran has cracked down on protests by opposition supporters since the disputed poll in which president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected in June.
The Basiji are known as the street enforcers of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The annual Students Day event commemorates the death of three students killed during an anti-American protest in 1953.
Iran's opposition-in-exile the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) claimed that students at Tehran University were chanting slogans calling for "death to the dictator", referring to the country's Supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Tehran University students were also seen carrying slogans that read "we support the detained students".
An NCRI statement on Monday - quoting sources belonging to the People's Mojahedin Organisation of Iran dissent group inside Tehran - also claimed that thousands of students at Tehran University were honouring the memory of dead and arrested students.
Accounting students at a campus at the University of Azad located in the town of Roudehen, east of Tehran province, were also reportedly chanting anti-regime slogans such as "down with the deceptive government" on Monday.
