Burma: Deadly bomb attack in Rangoon on protest anniversary
Rangoon, 25 Sept. (AKI) - One person died and at least three others were injured when a bomb exploded in the Burmese capital, Rangoon, on Thursday.
Sein Win, editor-in-chief of the Burmese agency, Mizzima, confirmed the bomb attack in an interview with Adnkronos International (AKI) which occurred on the first anniversary of the military government's brutal crackdown against democracy demonstrations (photo).
Convoys of armed police are patrolling the streets of the capital ahead of the anniversary of the Saffron Revolution, when hundreds of thousands of Buddhist monks and others protested against the regime.
The bomb exploded at 10.35 am local time next to Rangoon’s Mahandoola Park where people were queuing at a bus stop, near the place where soldiers opened fire on unarmed protesters on 27 September 2007.
Although no-one has claimed responsibility for the attack, Win said a "20-year-old was believed to be a suspect".
Thursday's attack is the latest in a series of attacks that have struck Burma in recent months.
On 11 September a bomb exploded in Bago, 80 kilometres southeast of Rangoon. The attack, which killed two people and injured nine others, was linked to the Karen National Union, which denied any responsibility.
"At the moment, it is very difficult to understand what is happening in the country, considering the anger of the people in relation to the junta, especially recalling the repression against the monks."
