Italy: Human trafficking gang dismantled
Teramo, 29 July (AKI) - A human trafficking ring that operated throughout Italy has been dismantled, police authorities said on Wednesday. The prosecutor issued 17 arrest warrants for Italians and foreigners accused of abetting illegal immigration.
Authorities say the human trafficking gang managed to smuggle into Italy hundreds of foreigners, mainly Bangladeshi and Pakistani citizens, by issuing them with seasonal work permits.
The immigrants paid around 10,000 euros each to their countrymen living in Italy to enter Schengen-area countries.
The 25 European countries which currently make up the Schengen area have abolished border controls between them.
In order to obtain the work permits, immigrants' co-nationals in Italy would find an employer willing to request permits for a worker, usually in the agriculture sector.
