Iran: Earthquake injures hundreds in south
Tehran, 4 Nov. (AKI) - A magnitude 4.9 earthquake jolted southern Iran on Wednesday, Iran's state news agency IRNA reported. At least 700 people were injured in the quake which struck near the port city of Bandar Abbas.
IRNA said up to 100 people were transferred to local hospitals but no deaths were reported.
Terrified inhabitants reportedly ran out into the streets and refused to return to their homes fearing further tremors. Power and phone lines were reported to have been severed in many cities.
Iran is located on some of the world's most active seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes.
A powerful earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale rocked the area around Khamir port near Bandar Abbas in September last year. No casualties or property damage was reported.
The historic Iranian city of Bam was destroyed by a 6.7 magnitude earthquake which killed some 31,000 people in 2003 (photo).
Bam lies about 1,000 kilometres southeast of the capital,Tehran.
