Pakistan: Militants attack NATO convoy in southeast

Dera Allah Yar, 24 Nov. (AKI) - Militants early on Tuesday destroyed at least four oil tankers carrying fuel for Western forces in Afghanistan, killing one driver in an attack in southeastern Pakistan, private TV network Aaj News reported.

The attack took place before dawn in Dera Allah Yar, a small town located near the border between the provinces of Balochistan and Sindh.

Up to eight gunmen fired at the vehicles on a main highway, triggering a blaze that engulfed four oil trucks, Aaj News said.

One driver was killed and the movement of trucks transporting US and NATO supplies has been temporarily suspended, Aaj said.

NATO-led forces battling the Taliban-led insurgency in landlocked Afghanistan largely depend on Pakistan for the transport of non-essential supplies, which are are shipped to Sindh's capital Karachi.

The NATO convoys haul most goods from Karachi to Afghanistan through Pakistan's northwestern region. But owing to frequent militant attacks in the lawless tribal belt, some military supplies are sent via the province of Balochistan, which also borders Afghanistan.
