Tennis: Penetta rises in world rankings after US win

Los Angeles, 10 August (AKI) - Italy's Flavia Pennetta on Monday rose to world number 12 in the Women's Tennis Association rankings after she defeated Australia's Samantha Stosur in straight sets at the Los Angeles Women's Tennis Championships.

Pennetta, 27, gained her second title of the year after she beat an error-prone Stosur 6-4 6-3 on Sunday.

"My serve was very good," Pennetta said after the match. She was seeded tenth at the tournament.

"I was very aggressive and I went to the net a few times and every time I went there, I won the point. That was a big step to improve my game."

It was Pennetta's second WTA tour title this year after she won the Palermo Open last month.

Russia's Dinara Safina is now the world's number one player, followed by Serena Williams (2), Venus Williams (3), Russia's Elena Dementieva (4), Serbia's Jelena Jankovic (5), Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova (6), Russia's Vera Zvonareva (7), Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki (8), Belarus's Victoria Azarenka (9) and Russia's Nadia Petrova (10), according to the WTA rankings.
