F1: Injured driver back in 2010, says Ferrari

Maranello, 1 Sept. (AKI) - Injured Ferrari Formula One driver Felipe Massa could return to the track in 2010 after medical tests revealed his head injury is not as serious as previously thought. Massa was in the southern US city of Miami on Sunday for extensive neurological tests at Jackson Memorial Hospital Neuroscience intensive care unit.

"The checks all had a positive outcome, just like the eye exam: everything is in order for Felipe to get back to racing," said a statement on Ferrari's website.

Massa suffered a life-threatening head injury during the Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying last month. He has been recovering ever since.

"Naturally the results were received with great joy and satisfaction at Maranello with the prospect to be able to count on Felipe 100 percent for the start of the next racing season," said the Maranello-based brand.

“I’m very happy about the results,” Massa told the official Ferrari website before boarding the plane back to his native Brazil.

“After the small surgery in the next days I can finally start to go to the gym to get back into shape and drive some tests ," he said.

"Let’s take it step by step: at the moment I’m concentrating on taking up physical activities which is a great step forward.”

Massa underwent neurometric, impact, and eye tests as well as cognitive capacity tests.
