Italy: Rome football team plans new stadium

Rome, 29 Sept. (AKI) - One of Italy's top football teams, AS Roma, has revealed plans for a new 300 million euro stadium to accommodate up to 60,000 spectators. The proposal was announced at a media conference in Rome on Tuesday.

Rosella Sensi, president of the AS Roma football team, said it would be the fulfillment of a dream.

"My father and Dino Viola had at the centre of their programme, the issue of having our own stadium. I apologise for getting emotional during this special moment, which represents the dream of a lifetime," she said.

The stadium, to be built in the area of Aurelia, northwest of Rome would take up to five years to be build at cost around 300 million euros.

The stadium will be named after the late Franco Sensi, father of the current president who was general manager of AS Roma for 15 years until his death in 2008.

However, there is still controversy surrounding the use of public funding for the new stadium.

The mayor of Rome Gianni Alemanno attended the media conference and backed the project.

"AS Roma has the right to have a stadium. (Rome's) Olympic stadium was not designed as a football stadium, but instead as an Olympic stadium," said Alemanno.

Meanwhile, the club's most famous football star Francesco Totti (photo) said he hoped to play in the new stadium.

"I hope I can play in the new stadium and I hope it is built quickly," said Totti, who added that the dedication of the stadium for Franco Sensi was overdue.
