Tennis: Italy's Pennetta holds place in women's top 10
Rome, 5 October. (AKI) - Italian tennis champion Flavia Pennetta has held 10th place in the latest Women's Tennis Association world rankings. Russia's Dinara Safina remains in the number-one slot, followed by the US sisters Serena (2) and Venus Williams (3). Besides Pennetta, there are five other Italian women in the WTA's top 100 tennis players.
Francesca Schiavone occupies 26th place, Sara Errani, 44th, Roberta Vinci 57th place, Tathiana Garbin 60th, and Alberta Brianti, 70th place in the WTA rankings.
Pennetta has won two titles this year - the Los Angeles Women's Tennis Championships in August and the Palermo Open in July. The 29-year-old from the southern Italian port city of Brindisi also reached the quarter finals at the US Open last month.
The first Italian women to make the WTA top 10, Pennetta returned to Italy to a hero's welcome after reaching the quarter-finals of the US Open.
Last week featured on the cover of Italy's top tennis magazine, Il Tennis Italiano and appeared on the catwalk at Milan Fashion Week, modelling swimwear.
