Italy: Dogs given access to Sardinia beaches, along with rich and famous
last update: August 03, 15:49
Cagliari, 3 Aug. (AKI) - The crystalline waters and the rosy sand of Sardinia's beaches have been enjoyed by the world's rich and famous. Now their furry friends can join them too. New rules allow dogs to access many of the Mediterranean island's beautiful beaches.
Dogs will now be able to accompany their owners everywhere during the summer holidays, and the latter will not have to worry about fines nor have any restrictions as to where to go.
"We wanted to satisfy the requests of many citizens that have been fighting for a place reserved for their animals on the beach", explained Mayor of Sardinia Contini.
"We also decided to show some sensitivity towards the owners of dogs, including both citizens and tourists, pleading for this service", said Monica Spanedda, the assessor of Environmental Politics of Sassari. "In addition, we think we contributed to the struggle against the abandonment of dogs during the summer months", she concluded.
Specific stretches of beaches between 50 and 70 metres, equipped with umbrellas and sun beds, will be assigned to people with dogs. There are not many restrictions, as long as the dogs are healthy, not violent, and not in heat.
