Tehran, 25 June (AKI) - Iran's hardline government has hailed the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohammed Mursi's victory in Egypt's first democratic presidential polls as "an Islamic awakening" in the region.
"The foreign ministry of the Islamic Republic congratulates the Egyptian nation on its victory in these elections and the presidency of Mohammed Mursi," the ministry said in a statement Monday published by Iran's Isna student news agency.
"The revolutionary movement of the Egyptian people is a sign of an Islamic awakening in the region," the statement added.
Iran's semi-official Fars news agency reported that Mursi had said in an interview he planned to expand relations with Iran to "create a balance of pressure in the region," but Mursi's spokesman denied the interview had taken place.
