Rome, 21 Dec. (AKI) - Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s government popularity declined to 24 percent from 27 percent in December month, IPR marketing polls showed.

Italians' confidence in the billionaire politician among was unchanged at 35 percent, Rome-based IPR said today. The monthly polls, which measure voting intentions, surveyed 1,000 adults each between 15 December and 19 December.

Berlusconi narrowly survived a confidence vote with a three-vote margin in the lower house of parliament.

The 74-year-old premier - who earlier this year split with a key ally who formed his own party - is on trial for graft and tax fraud and his critics say he is too mired in personal scandal and corruption allegations to remain in office.

His government - currently half way through a five-year elected term - has also been criticised for its handling of Italy's stumbling economy.
