Egypt: Govt orders imams to decline invites to visit Iran

Egypt, 22 June (AKI) - Egypt's religious affairs ministry has sent a letter to all the country' imams ordering them not to accept invitations from Tehran to visit Iran or face "serious" punishment.
"We invite you to refuse such suspect invitations, which are aimed at creating divisions in our communities," said the letter.
"Serious measures will be taken against those imams who accept such invitations," it added.
The letter follows a recent flurry of exchange visits between Iranian and Egyptian imams.
Some observers have interpreted the visits as a sign of warming relations between Cairo and Tehran, but sections of the Egyptian clergy claim that Irans' aim is to spread Shia propaganda in Sunni Muslim Egypt.
