Aleppo, 28 Aug. (AKI) - Melkite Greek Catholic archbishop of Aleppo Jean-Clement Jeanbart fled the war-battered Syria city of Aleppo to Lebanon, according to missionary news agency Fides and Vatican radio.
The report on Monday said his office was looted soon after he left by "unidentified groups who want to start a religious war and drag the Syrian people into a sectarian conflict."
Almost 8 percent of Syrians are Christian.
Melkite Greek Catholics are part of the Eastern Catholic Church in full communion with the Vatican.
