
Syria: Car bomb strikes Damascus

Damascus, 24 April (AKI) - At least one person was killed by a car bomb that exploded in the centre of Damascus on Tuesday, Syrian according to reports. Few details of the attack were immediately available.
The explosion occurred near the Iranian cultural center, Al-Jazeera reported.
The level of violence in Syria is high with at least 80 people killed by shelling in on Monday. Fifty of the victims were in Hama, according the Local Coordination Committees of Syria, a coalition of opposition activists.
The United Nation Security Council on Saturday voted to send up to 300 observers to monitor the violence in Syria.
A ceasefire jointly brokered by the UN and Arab League went into effect on 12 April, but violence continues, albeit at a reduced level.
The cease-fire is part of a six-point peace plan negotiated by special envoy Kofi Annan and accepted by the Syrian government.
More than 9,000 people have died in the 13 months of violence.
