Italy: Filipino baby dies after being injected with milk by mistake
last update: July 23, 17:43
Rome, 23 July (AKI) - Six staff members at a Rome hospital were on Monday being investigated after a premature Filipino baby died when he was injected with artificial milk instead of saline solution.
The staff members being probed at Rome's San Giovanni hospital include doctors, nurses and auxiliaries
Italy's health minister Renato Balduzzi ordered an immediate investigation of the staff members after the seven-month-old baby boy named Marco received the fatal intravenous injection of milk in late June.
Marco died on 29 June two days after being injected with the artificial milk. He had been transferred to the neonatal unit at San Giovanni from a hospital in the seaside town of Ostia where he was born at 36 weeks gestation.
San Giovanni's director general Gianluigi Bracciale claims the baby's parents were informed "promptly" of the cause of the baby's death.
