Milan, 24 May (AKI) - Italian police have arrested a middle-aged man who coached a junior football team in the northern city of Milan after boys complained to their mothers he had groomed and sexually abused them.
Livio Volpi, 41, used text messages and online chatrooms to groom five members of the U.S. Viscontini soccer team aged 13-14 and got them to perform sex acts via webcam, according to investigators.
In January 2009, one of the boys, whom Volpi is alleged to have physically abused, told other teammates. They told their mothers, who went to the police.
Police in February 2009 began investigating Volpi. He faces charges of sex acts with and corruption of minors and police believe he may not only have abused boys on the soccer team
Police arrested Volpi at his home in the Milan suburb of Abbiategrasso, where he lived with his mother and seized his computer as evidence for the charges.
It is not the first time sex abuse has been uncovered at the U.S. Viscontini. In 2003, trainers were forbidden from taking showers with boys after the team's president was reported to police for sexual violence.
