Football: American Roma owner 'to build team with young players'

Rome, 14 July (AKI) - The new owner of the AS Roma soccer team on Thursday described his ownership as the "beginning of a new era" that aims to win the Italian championship by developing youthful talent.
"We hope to win the championship as soon as possible," said American Thomas Richard DiBenedetto, who earlier this year led an investor group to purchase the team.
"We're pursuing young players and we need to have some patience with the talent we have," he told a conference in Trigoria, a town near Rome where Roma trains.
DiBenedetto may want to develop his team with young players but he still has confidence in 34-year-old captain Francesco Totti who he he said it "the best player Roma has ever had. Maybe the best in Italy.
"He is a winner and we want to win," DiBenedetto said.
As part owner of the Boston Red Sox baseball team DiBenedetto probably knows something about patience. The team went 86 years before winning the World Series baseball championship in 2004.
Roma, founded in 1927, has only won the Italian Serie A championship three times, most recently in the 2000-2001 season. The team finished the latest season in sixth place.
