A workman was killed Tuesday at Italian shipbuilding giant Fincantieri's yard in La Spezia when he removed a pressurised metal tube that struck him in the face.
The 42-year-old man was given first aid by emergency services and was flown by helicopter to a hospital in nearby Genoa but died soon afterwards.
He was employed by a subcontractor at the shipyard owned by state-controlled Fincantieri and was doing maintenance work on an Italian navy ship at the time of the accident.
Trieste-based Fincantieri is the largest shipbuilder in Europe and the fourth largest in the world.
