Qatar Airways to buy a stake in Italian carrier Meridiana

Gulf carrier Qatar Airways will acquire a stake in struggling Italian airline Meridiana under a deal signed on Monday by the two companies after nearly two days of intense negotiations.

Qatar Airlines has agreed to lay off "less than four hundred" Meridiana workers, according to deputy economic development minister Teresa Bellanova.

"They were long and difficult negotiations but we managed to put a complicated operation to bed," Bellanova said.

"Less than 400 workers will be laid off and for 36 months the company is obliged to give these people priority for eventual new hirings."

"There's an industrial plan in place to allow Meridiana to be relaunched," she said.

Qatar Airways is the latest big Gulf carrier to show interest in an Italian airline. The UAE's Etihad Airways acquired a 49 per cent stake in Alitalia, Italy’s national airline, in 2014.

The privately owned Sardinia-based Meridiana owns a fleet of 20 aircraft and carries 4 million passengers annually, according to its website.

Qatar Airways had planned to cut the airline's 1,600 workforce by 500 - mainly cabin crew, according to a Meridiana spokeswoman.
