Plans announced to reduce the workforce at loss-making steelmaker ILVA by 5,000-6,000 are "unacceptable", trade unions said on Tuesday.

"The proposal chosen by the commissioners, that of Arcelor Mittal-Marcegaglia and that put forward by Acciai Italia foresee unacceptable job cuts," said the leader of Italy's Fiom union, Maurizio Landini.

"We are talking about 5,000 to 6,000 fewer jobs," Landini said.

He was speaking after a meeting on revamping the Taranto-based plant with industry minister Carlo Calenda and government-appointed commissioners, Enrico Laghi, Piero Gnudi and Corrado Carrubba.

Fiom and other unions said they would meet Calenda again on Thursday to outline their official position.

The redundancies have been presented by both consortia bidding for ILVA: Anglo-Italian steel giant Arcelor Mittal/Italian-owned Marcegaglia; and Acciai Italia, a rival group including India’s JSW Steel.

During Tuesday's meeting, Calenda said the winner of the tender had not yet been decided, but the two bids for Ilva had been assessed by the commissioners, who favoured Arcelor Mittal-Marcegaglia's.

Key elements in the successful bid are the price, which is reportedly just under two billion euros, the environmental impact of the takeover plan, the business plan including Ilva's continuing location in Italy.

Calenda will make a final decision after his meeting with unions on Thursday.

Ilva, Europe's largest steelworks, is based in the southern port city of Taranto was put up for sale in 2015, after a court ordered the seizure of assets at its highly polluting plant in the economically depressed area of Taranto in southern Italy.
