Govt working to receive offers for Embraco - Calenda

The government is open to offers for Embraco's factory in northwest Italy after the US-owned electrical appliances manufacturer said it will switch production to Slovakia and fire 497 workers, Italy's economic development minister Carlo Calenda stated on Wednesday.

"We are working to receive all offers of interest and to present them to unions. We have asked for a meeting to be organised between Friday and Monday at the economic development ministry," Calenda stated.

European Parliament president Antonio Tajani on Wednesday slammed "social dumping" in the EU during a visit to Brussels by workers from Embraco's Riva di Chieri factory and Piedmont regional governor Sergio Chiamparino.

"EU anti-dumping rules also outlaw social dumping. We can't ask the Chinese to respect our regulations without respecting these within the bloc," Tajani stated.

"There can be no social dumping by non-European companies or countries," Tajani said.

Embraco is a Brazilian fridge-compressor maker controlled by American domestic-appliance group Whirlpool.

"Today I'll call Brazil's industry minister and the CEO of Embraco's parent company and we'll see if it is possible to intervene in the US and show that this is not the way to invest positively in Europe," Tajani said.

Calenda last week took up the Embraco case with the European Commission to see if Slovakia has breached European Union state aid rules and if Rome can be allowed to intervene to save the plant in Riva di Chieri near Turin without breaching those same rules.
