Gay man punched, insulted in Rome suburb

A gay man was punched in the face and insulted by two men in northwest Rome late on Monday, as local residents looked on without intervening, Italian rights group Gay Centre reported on Tuesday.

"A young man of 26 was about to get into his car the Primavalle neighbourhood, in a street where just over a week ago someone punctured his tyre, " the group said in a statement.

"Two men aged around 30 approached and began hurling insults like "fucking faggot" before punching him in the face," the statement added.

"Numerous residents were on the street at the time of the attack but no one tried to stop it or to help the victim after the aggressors made off," the statement continued.

Some of the man's friends called the rights group's helpline to report the attack, Gay Centre spokesman Fabrizio Marrazzo said.

The man was left with bruising to his face and reported the attack to police, Marrazzo said.

"We are in touch with man and have offered him legal and psychological support," he stated.

The Gay Centre helpline receives daily calls reporting homophobic attacks across the country, according to Marrazzo.

Marazzo deplored what he described as widespread "indifference" in Italy to such attacks and a "climate of hatred" stoked by certain social groups and political parties.

He urged legislation to protect gay people's rights, including civil unions and measures to outlaw homophobia.

"We need to see a sharp improvement. The young man beaten up in Primavalle is the umpteenth incident that shows concrete action is needed," he said.
