'Queen of Cashmere' Laura Biagiotti dies at 73

Italian fashion designer Laura Biagiotti, dubbed 'the Queen of Cashmere' for her luxurious knitwear died on Friday at the age of 73 following a heart attack at her castle near Rome.

Biagiotti died at Rome's Sant'Andrea hospital at 2.47 am, after she was admitted there late on Wednesday.

"Thanks for all my beloved mum! Forever together ❤" tweeted Biagiotti's daughter, Lavinia Biagiotti, who is vice-chairman of the Biagiotti Group.

Italy's premier Paolo Gentiloni sent condolences to Biagiotti's family, calling the late stylist "a dear friend and protagonist of Italian and international fashion culture," said sources at the prime minister's office.

Biagiotti's funeral will be held at Rome's Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs at 11 am on Saturday.

Biagiotti was one of the first female Italian stylists to become a global brand with her soft, loose women’s clothing crafted with silk and cashmere. Her company also produces sunglasses, watches and other accessories as well as perfumes such as the popular 'Roma' fragrance, and she designed clothes for several films.

Born in Rome in 1943, Biagiotti wanted to become an archaeologist but ditched her plans to help run her mother's dressmaking business. She first presented her own fashion collection in Florence in 1972 and by the 1980s was making her mark.

The first Italian designer to present a show in China in 1988 and in Russia in 1995, Biagiotti won Italian and international awards for her contribution to the fashion industry.

The Italian post office issued a 41 euro cent stamp bearing Biagiotti's name in 2002.

Biagiotti's husband, Gianni Cigna, died of leukaemia in 1996.
