The European Union needs to react quickly to Britain's vote to leave the bloc and must regain unity with a focus on investment and growth, Italy's premier Matteo Renzi said ahead of an EU summit on Tuesday.

"It's all right to feel shock, but this is the moment to react, to turn the page. This is not the time for division, but vision," Renzi told CNN.

''Now it's necessary to start a new season of investments and not just financial discussions," Renzi said.

Markets and the European public urgently need answers and cannot wait, Renzi added.

''We are ready to do everything necessary to guarantee savings and citizens,'' he said.

Renzi is eyeing a multibillion-euro rescue of his country's ailing lenders after sell-offs of Italian bank shares hit by market turbulence following last Thursday's UK referendum result, according to bankers and officials.

The plan is said to use "financial stability" grounds to get around strict EU state aid rules in a bid to shore up the Italian banking sector, which is fast becoming one of the eurozone's weakest links, according to analysts.
