Italy's anti-immigrant Northern League party leader on Wednesday welcomed Donald Trump's election as US president calling it a "beautiful day" and "a revenge of the people".
"lt's a beautiful day which teaches us that who dare wins, cocking a snook at everyone," Matteo Salvini told journalists at the Italian parliament in Rome.
"It marks epoch-making change and is an historic day that is good news for world peace and for Italian and European interests," he continued.
Political outsider Trump's stunning win against Democrat Hillary Clinton on Tuesday confounded the financial and political establishment as well as "European Union bureaucrats" Salvini said.
"It's a victory for courage, pride and labour and security issues against the banks, speculators, journalists and pollsters," Salvini earlier told his party's Radio Padania station.
"The people have beaten the powers-that-be 3-0," Salvini said.
Far-right political leaders around Europe have lauded Trump's election including Marine Le Pen of France's National Front, Geert Wilders of the Dutch Party for Freedom, Beatrix von Storch of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and Nigel Farage, a leading Brexit campaigner and ex-chief the euro-sceptic UK Independence party (UKIP).
