Five-Star grassroots in revolt against Raggi

The hashtag '#Sendherbackwhereyougotherfrom# was trending on Twitter Friday as the grassroots Five-Star movement reeled from news of a fresh scandal to hit Rome's embattled mayor Virginia Raggi.

Raggi on Thursday denied knowing that her former cabinet chief Salvatore Romeo allegedly took out a 30,000 euro insurance policy in her name six months before she hired him and almost tripled his salary.

"Can someone put an insurance policy in my name? I'll return the favour with a top job," one supporter of the web-base Five-Star Movement wrote on Facebook.

"Could this really have been done without her (Raggi's) knowledge?", another Five-Star activist wrote on the social-networking site.

"Who did we elect?" the activist added.

'Policy-gate' is the latest scandal to embroil Raggi, who was elected mayor in landslide victory last June on a transparency and anti-corruption ticket.

The allegations reported by investigative daily Il Fatto Quotidiano on Thursday came the same day that Raggi was grilled for eight hours by prosecutors probing her for alleged abuse of office and false testimony over the hiring of Rome city hall's tourism chief.

Raggi's legal woes come just weeks after the Five-Star Movement to which she belongs said it would not require its politicians who are put under legal investigation to automatically resign.

But a continuous stream of graft and cronyism allegations have dogged Raggi's administration, proving a deep embarrassment to the Five-Star Movement, which presents itself as a squeaky-clean alternative to the country's corruption-plagued traditional parties.

A recent survey ranked Raggi the second least popular of Italian mayors.
