Mattarella congratulates Macron on victory

Ital's head of state Sergio Mattarella on Monday wrote to incoming French president Emmanuel Macron offering congratulations on his landslide electoral win.

"Your election to the presidency constitutes proof of the confidence for the future and a signal of adhering to the ideal of continental integration," read letter.

"It is a particularly important signal because it comes only a few weeks after the summit of the Heads of State and Government who, in Rome, celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Treaties establishing the European Union."

The letter said that as founding members of the EU France and Italy had a responsibility to make a "decisive, concrete and far-sighted contribution" to re-launching "our common European home".

Coming just over five weeks after Britain began the formal process of leaving the EU after last June's referendum, the letter stressed the "historical, cultural, human, political and economic ties" between France and Italy, calling these "age-old".

"Only in the light of this tradition, which also includes our common belonging to the Atlantic Alliance, will we be able to overcome the ever-more complex challenges faced by our societies," Mattarella said.

Italian premier Paolo Gentiloni and foreign minister Angelino Alfano also lauded the pro-EU, business-friendly Macron's crushing victory over far-right candidate and Euro-sceptic Marine Le Pen in Sunday's presidential run-off.

"Hurrah for #Macron President - it offers Europe hope," tweeted Gentiloni.

"Emmanuel Macron has won," Alfano said via Twitter.

"France and those who believe in Europe, in free trade, in solidarity, are celebrating.

"We await for him at the G7 (summit) in Taormina (on 26-27 May)".
