UNDP, Italy and Sudan launch stabilisation project to help poor, youth

The United Nation Development Project, the Sudanese and Italian governments have inked an accord for a 12-month project to reduce poverty and fight radicalisation, migration and crime among young people, the Italian ambassador in Khartoum announced.

The Italian government's overseas aid department is co-funding the 'Community Security and Stabilisation Programme, C2SP' with a financial contribution of a million euros, Italy's ambassador to Sudan, Fabrizio Lobasso said.

UNDP is coordinating the initiative, one of the agency's flagship projects aimed at strengthening the resilience capacity of the weakest sectors of Sudan's population through better access to water and health facilities, education and youth employment.

“Creating better conditions to allow young people to access the labour market is not just a social issue,” Lobasso stated.

"Youth employment is one of the most important political means to combat the spread of radicalisation, criminality and illegal immigration,” he said.

The accord, signed by Lobasso, UNDP and the Sudanese Disarmament Demobilisation and Reintegration Commission, covers flashpoint areas of Sudan including its southern Blue Nile state and the Mayo refugee camp on the outskirts of Khartoum.

Blue Nile state and the Mayo camp need to be stabilised "through a strong process of inter-tribal and inter-ethnic integration," Lobasso stated.

“The added value of the programme is not just the development of human capital," Lobasso said.

"It is also to boost the ability of local and international stakeholders to network and produce synergies to get the most outstanding results in the shortest possible time."
