The Italian Radicals on Monday urged the government to take Cambodian authorities to task over the imprisonment of the country's main opposition leader, Kem Sokha and the disbanding of his party.
"Foreign under-secretary, Benedetto Della Vedova, will attend the ASEM foreign ministers' meeting being held in Myanmar and will meet representatives of the Cambodian government there," the Italian Radicals said in a statement.
"He has special responsibility for Asian countries and we ask him to press Cambodia's authorities on the question of the wholly unconstitutional and politically motivated dissolution of the country's main opposition party, the Cambodian National Rescue Party, whose president, Kem Sokha, has been illegally detained since 3 September."
The United States Congress and the European Parliament have condemned Cambodia's crackdown against the opposition and are considering halting aid aimed at improving the Asian country's governance, the party said.
"The Italian (ASEM) delegation should ask the Cambodian authorities to meet Kem Sokha," the statement added, noting that his party represents three million Cambodian voters.
