Politicians from Italy's left-wing Progressive Camp party on Monday said they would be taking part in demonstrations on Monday - Universal Children's Day - to demand the passage of legislation granting Italian citizenship to thousands of minors who were born in the country.
Maria Pia Pizzolante, Marco Furfaro, Luigi Manconi, Michele Piras and Filiberto Zaratti will be among those taking part in the rallies urging rapid approval of a long-delayed bill granting Italian citizenship to the children of immigrants, the Progressive Camp said.
Under the hostly contested bill, children born in Italy to non-Italians, or who arrive before their 12th birthday and spend at least five years in formal education, could be declared citizens.
One of the children's parents need have a long-term residence permit before they can apply for citizenship, according to the bill.
