US secretary of state Rex Tillerson has advised European foreign ministers to wait to see what president Donald Trump says about the US's possible recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, Italy's foreign minister Angelino Alfano said on Tuesday.
"He asked us to listen to the whole of the declaration that US president Donald Trump will make on the issue of Washington's possible recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel," Alfano told reporters on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Brussels.
"He (Tillerson) said not to make judgements in advance without listening to him," Alfano added.
Alfano was speaking after a meeting between, Tillerson, the European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and the EU's 28 foreign ministers.
"It will be quite a detailed declaration from what we gathered and will concern the peace process in the Middle East, not just Jerusalem," Alfano stated.
The EU ministers and Mogherini underlined to Tillerson in their meeting that the bloc continues back separate Palestinian and Jewish states and that the final status of Jerusalem must be negotiated, he said.
The peace negotiations "begun in these past years unluckily without definitive results cannot however be put on different track," Alfano said.
