The government has told Whirlpool unit Embraco to reinstate the 497 workers it is firing at its at its plant at Riva di Chieri near Turin, Italy's economic development minister Carolo Calenda said on Monday.

"I have made it clear that Embraco must reinstate the fired employees," Calenda told public broadcaster Rai 3's 'Agora' talk show.

"If the company fails to do this, it is declaring war on the Italian government," Calenda warned.

Embraco, which makes compressors for fridges, confirmed the job losses at Riva di Chieri in late January, saying it was effectively shutting down its Italy production with the closure of the plant.

The company is expected to shift manufacturing of the fridge compressors to its biggest plant, which is located in Slovakia.

Embraco, which is part of the US white goods manufacturer Whirlpool group, says it will maintain a sales office in Italy.
