Netherlands has no alternative site for European Medicines Agency - MEP

Should the planned site in Amsterdam for the London-based European Medicines Agency not be ready when Britain leaves the European Union next year, the Dutch government has no alternative location, Italian Euro-MP Giovanni La Via said on Thursday.

"There is no back-up plan: if the building work isn't finished in time, there is no alternative," said La Via, who is chairman of the European Parliament's Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Commission (ENVI).

La Via and other ENVI members were due to carry out an inspection on Thursday of the planned EMA site in Amsterdam.

"We'll visit the site of the Vivaldi Building in the afternoon and assess what it will be necessary to do to have a suitable headquarters for the EMA," La Via said.

The EMA is due to leave the British capital by March 30, 2019.

In November, Amsterdam beat Milan in a coin toss after tied voting between EU governments. But the Italian government and the city of Milan have appealed the decision to move the EMA to Amsterdam amid concerns the offices may not be ready.

Italy's foreign minister Angelino Alfano has launched a diplomatic offensive in Brussels to win the EMA.

The European Parliament should be "central" to any decision on the new location for the EMA, European Parliament president Antonio Tajani said earlier this week.

The controversial decision made in Brussels last year to award the EMA to the Netherlands reportedly cost Italy almost 1.7 billion euros.
