An anti-European stance by any future government would be "devastating" for Italy, the deputy leader of the ruling centre-left Democratic Party and agriculture minister, Maurizio Martina, said on Friday.

"Italy cannot abandon Europe. Any scenario in which Italy does not play a leading role in building a new Europe would be devastating for our country," Martina told Radio'anch'io public radio.

"It would weaken our companies, our families and our workers," Martina said in the interview ahead of Italy's national election on Sunday.

Italian eurosceptic groups have blamed Germany for imposing austerity on the rest of the EU, and for holding back growth.

Matteo Salvini, a member of ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi’s center-right coalition and longstanding eurosceptic, said in a TV interview last week that Italians could not be "slaves of Berlin or Brussels".

"Members of this union (the Euroepan Union) yes, but as Italians, not as slaves of Berlin or Brussels,” Salvini told Bloomberg Television.

Polls taken before a Feb. 17 blackout suggest the alliance is the only group with a chance of winning a parliamentary majority.
