Italy's finance minister Giovanni Tria will travel to China next week - his first official trip outside the European Union since he took office in June - in a bid to strengthen economic and trade relations between the two countries.

"Italy and China share the wish to maintain a climate of cooperation in the ordered development of the global economy and the stability of financial markets, as well supporting sustainable growth and employment," the finance ministry said in a statement.

Bank of Italy deputy director Fabio Panetta will accompany Tria on the six-day visit to China beginning Monday, the ministry said.

The visit "seeks to help consolidate multilateral as well as bilateral ties," the ministry stated.

Tria, an economist, will hold talks in Beijing with his Chinese counterpart Liu Kun and with the governor of China's central bank, Yi Gang, according to the ministry.

Tria and Panetta will have "numerous" meetings with officials in Beijing and in Shanghai, as well as with Chinese and Italian business people. He will also visit the stock-exchange, said the ministry.
