European Union sanctions against the authoritarian government of Hungary's far-right premier Viktor Orban cannot be justified, European Parliament president Antonio Tajani said Wednesday, claiming that EU member states Malta, Slovakia and Romania fared worse on the rule of law.

"I won't vote, but Forza Italia's position on sanctions against Hungary is clear: the preconditions do not exist," Tajani told Italy's Radio 24.

Tajani belongs to the conservative Forza Italia, whose leader Silvio Berlusconi said on Tuesday his party would not vote in favour of sanctions against the Orban government.

"Why has no action been taken against Malta or Slovakia, which have leftist governments and where much worse things have occurred (than in Hungary)," he said, accusing Euro MPs of "double standards".

"And why has nothing been done about Romania?" Tajani went on.

Forza Italia's ally the rightwing League party will also opposed sanctions against Hungary in the European Parliament vote due on Wednesday.

MEPs from the grassroots Five-Star Movement - the League party's coalition partner in the coalition government - will back sanctions against Hungary, Five-Star has said.

In Wednesday's vote, MEPs will decide whether to trigger a little-tested EU rule of law procedure against Orban over the weakening of press freedom and an erosion of judicial independence in Hungary, his government's migration policies and the alleged misspending of EU funds by Orban's friends and family during his premiership.

If the European Parliament votes to launch 'Article 7' sanction procedures against Orban's government, it could lead to a suspension of Hungary's voting rights in EU affairs. For it the vote to pass, two-thirds of MEPs must be in favour of disciplinary process.

Wednesday's vote comes just months after the European Commission took the step of launching similar proceedings against Poland.
