Govt decree to target immigration 'business' says Salvini

The populist Italian government is poised to issue an decree that cracks down on the illegal immigration "business", anti-migrant interior minister and deputy premier Matteo Salvini said on Tuesday.

"The decree is on the home straight and there is already some very good news. The head of a social centre in Castel Volturno, whose profession is to manage immigrants, has accused me of creating mayhem," Salvini said.

"I am being attacked by left-wing extremists and by those whose business is immigration. So I am on the right road," Salvini said.

Salvini gave no details on the precise contents of the decree, which once issued must be voted into law by the Italian parliament within 60 days.

The far-right politician has taken a hardline stance on migration since taking office in June. He has banned NGO rescue ships from docking at Italy's ports, accusing them of abetting human trafficking, has set a goal of "zero" immigration and has vowed to deport half a million illegal immigrants.

He and Austria's far-right interior minister Herbert Kickl have proposed that migrants be held on ships while their eligibility for asylum is assessed. Migrants who don't qualify to request asylum should be denied entry to Europe under the plan.
