Italy and South Korea are set to ink defence and civil aviation accords during a visit to Rome on Wednesday by South Korean president Moon Jae-in, Italian ambassador to Seoul, Marco Della Seta, told Adnkronos.

"The visit will provide an opportunity to sign a bilateral defence cooperation agreement," Della Seta said.

"Another accord will be in the civil aviation sector," he said.

A further agreement will create mechanism for coordination between the industry ministry and its South Korean counterpart, while an accord may also be signed between Italy's and South Korea's foreign trade institutes on reciprocal investment support, Della Seta said.

Moon is slated to meet Conte at 2.30 pm local time at the prime minister's office (Palazzo Chigi) after a lunch with Italy's president Sergio Mattarella at the Quirinale Palace. He is due to meet Pope Francis at the Vatican on Thursday.

During his visit to Italy, the first by a South Korean president since 2014, Moon is expected to "tell his personal success story and that of his people" in seeking reconciliation with North Korea, Della Seta said.

"There can be no doubt that the dynamic of the dialogue that has been created owes much to president Moon, who has also mediated between North Korea and the United States," he said.

Moon is travelling to Italy from France, where he arrived from Brussels after attending a European Union-Asia summit.
