Italian Ebola nurse fever-wracked but alert

The Italian nurse infected with Ebola has "widespread fever" and remains in a critical condition but is "alert and cooperative" a medical bulletin said on Wednesday.

"He is feeding himself autonomously and taking medicine orally and intravenously," said the bulletin said from doctors at Rome's Spallanzani hospital, where the nurse was admitted on 13 May.

The 37-year-old nurse fell ill on returning home to his native Sardinia after working for three months in Sierra Leone for the medical charity Emergency.

Thirteen of the nurse's relatives were quarantined on 15 May as a precautionary measure and three ambulance workers are being monitored.

Italy's health minister Beatrice Lorenzin has said the patient poses no infection risk as he isolated himself as soon as his symptoms appeared.

The current Ebola epidemic has now killed more than 11,000 people, almost all in West Africa, since it was first reported in March 2014 and over 26,720 cases have been reported.

People have died from the disease in Liberia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, the US and Mali.
