The number of people forced to flee their homes has increased four-fold since the conflict in Yemen began, with 1,267,590 now uprooted within their homeland. Meanwhile, over 51,000 people have fled the country, the United Nations said on Tuesday.

Around 80 percent of Yemenis uprooted from their homes by the ongoing conflict (approximately 800,000 people) are living with host families and showing "great resilience", the UN refugee agency UNHCR said.

At the same time, over 51,000 people have fled Yemen for Djibouti, Somalia, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Sudan, according to UNHCR.

There are also some 250,000 mainly Somali refugees in urban centres in Yemen, many of whom have fled the southern port city of Aden to Kharaz refugee camp in desert west of the city and to towns in southern Yemen, the agency said.

Despite the warfare in Yemen, over 37,000 refugees and migrants have arrived in the country by sea this year, mainly from Ethiopia, Somalia, Puntland and Somaliland and are "tricked" by smugglers who tell them the conflict is over, UNHCR reported.

More than 3,000 people have been killed in Yemen since the Saudi-led coalition's campaign of airstrikes began on 26 March against Iran-allied Shia Houthi rebels who seized the capital Sanaa and other parts of the country, amid ongoing fighting on the ground.

The conflict pits the Houthis and troops loyal to Yemen's former president Ali Abdullah Saleh against an array of forces. These include southern separatists, local and tribal militias, Sunni Islamic militants and loyalists of exiled president Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who has international backing.
