An alcoholic with psychiatric problems on Monday allegedly bludgeoned his 85-year-old mother to death with chair during an argument at their apartment in Pagani in Italy's southern Campania region.
Family members called police, who detained the 45-year-old suspect, Aniello Giordano.
Giordano was not in the apartment when police arrived at the murder scene but they found him wandering nearby streets in an apparently confused state.
At the time of the murder, Giordano, who had been receiving psychiatric treatment, was helping his mother move some furniture, according to a report by Naples daily Il Mattino.
The elderly woman was killed outright after Giordano repeatedly beat her about the head with the chair, according to investigators cited by the paper.
