Over 1,500 asylum-seekers land in southern Italy

An Italian navy vessel carrying 603 migrants and refugees docked in the southern port of Taranto on Monday and were transferred to reception centres in other locations.

The passengers included 105 women or whom four were pregnant and a two-month-old baby.

They were among 4,000 people plucked from three separate boats off the Libyan coast by the Italian navy ship 'Aviere' and other rescue vessels on Saturday.

Earlier on Monday, 906 people mainly from central Africa who were rescued on Saturday arrived in Reggio Calabria, including 23 children and 168 women, of whom 10 were pregnant, Italian local TV channel TRM reported.

A total of 5,000 asylum-seekers have been rescued by the Italian navy over the past three days.

Italy and Greece are the main entry points for asylum-seekers fleeing conflict and poverty in Africa, the Middle East and Asia, one million of are expected to seek refuge in Europe this year.
