Hacking group Anonymous says it has foiled an Islamic State terror attack on Italy after pledging to take on the jihadist group in the wake of the deadly Paris attacks last month.

Anonymous has not given any details of the alleged IS plot nor has the Italian government confirmed or denied if it had received information from Anonymous about the possible attack.

'In this month we are working in silence. We have already foiled 1 attack #ISIS against #Italy, we hope to block others.', Anonymous hackers wrote on their Operation Paris Twitter account, referring to IS by one of its full names, the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham [the Levant].

Traditionally, Anonymous opposes government control and surveillance but the group vowed to "hunt down" IS online following the assault in Paris on 13 November that killed 130 people and wounded 368.

Operation Paris, or #OpParis, is urging Anonymous members to hack into ISIS websites to steal key information and leak it online.
