Police arrest fugitive Naples mafia boss

Police early on Tuesday arrested fugitive Naples mafia boss Alessandro Giannelli after a car chase along the highway to Rome.

Thirty-eight-year-old Giannelli surrendered on the A3 highway when his Nissan car was surrounded by police cars with sirens blaring.

Giannelli's partner and their toddler were inside the car, Naples daily Il Messaggero reported. Giannelli had with him 5,000 euros in cash, fake identity documents, a Rolex watch and three mobile phones.

Giannelli went on the run in December and in January anti-mafia prosecutors issued an arrest warrant for him on charges of attempted extortion, criminal damage, assault and possessing illegal firearms.

The charismatic Giannelli, who has reputation for cunning, is an alleged Camorra boss in the hinterland between southern Naples and the town of Pozzuoli. Investigators suspect he instigated the deadly local turf wars between Kalashnikov-toting Camorra gangsters in which 10 people have been killed this year.

The Camorra is one of Italy's most violent mafia organisations and also one of the oldest, dating back to the 18th century. Its main sources of revenue include drug trafficking, extortion, arms trading, prostitution and waste disposal.

The best-selling novel Gomorra by Roberto Saviano, which was made into a successful film, laid bare the brutal workings of the Camorra.
