At least 65 bodies have been uncovered in a mass grave near the central Syrian city of Palmyra's military airport, a watchdog reported on Thursday.

The bodies are believed to be those of Syrian soldiers and pro-government militiamen killed by fighters from the Islamic State jihadist group, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Earlier on Thursday, Syria's state-run news agency Sana reported the discovery at the same site of 31 bodies with signs of torture, some of whom had been beheaded.

Another mass grave was discovered to the northeast of Palmyra in April, containing the bodies of over 40 people, including women and children.

IS fighters overran Palmyra in May last year and occupied the 4,000-year-old ancient Roman site for over 10 months, blowing up ancient temples, looting priceless relics and publicly executing 'spies' in its amphitheatre.
